5 of the world’s best salads

The dish known as salad is said to date back to the ancient Roman habit of dipping romaine lettuce in salt — “herbe salata” means “salted leaves.”
Now, centuries after the concept originated in Ancient Rome, salads may conjure for some an image of a tub of lettuce with choose-your-own mix-ins from ubiquitous salad chains; for others, it’s a warm bowl of grains (like farro salad) or a salad devoid of lettuce altogether (like a macaroni or potato salad, or cole slaw). Salad is considered by some a cold, dressed and chopped side dish while others turn salads into a full meal by adding a variety of proteins.
In short, salads mean different things to different people; the key lies in fresh ingredients, texture, and a well-balanced dressing.
Any way it’s served, a salad can speak volumes about a place. From Greece to Mexico to Ethiopia to Japan, it’s not just about ingredients (veggies, herbs, leaves) or seasonings and dressings and textures — there’s often a backstory to the recipe that invokes time, place and availability of produce. Ask any chef and they’ll tell you that creating a salad is not for the faint of heart, which is likely why so many classic salads have endured for years, with little variation beyond minor inclusions or exclusions.
Here are some of the best from around the world.

Deep-fried mini crab spot in Richmond shutting down this weekend

A restaurant in Richmond is preparing to say its final goodbye this weekend.
Chinese-Korean restaurant Cherry's Food House announced on social media that it will be closing permanently on Sept. 14 after a seven-year run on the well-known "food street" of Alexandra Road.
The restaurant was most well-known for its deep-fried mini crab dish, but also offered a variety of staple Korean dishes, from fried chicken and seafood pancakes to hot tofu soup and black bean noodles.
An Instagram post on the local business' account said it made the "difficult decision" to close, citing the end of its "current chapter" for the restaurant.
"Your support and loyalty over the years have meant the world to us, and we are truly grateful for every visit, every shared meal, and every memory made here," reads the post.

However, it hinted that "something new and exciting" would be coming soon in the future.
The team at Cherry's Food House also operated a food stall, Cherry's Tofu House, in Aberdeen Centre's food court, but closed early this summer.
Long-time Taiwanese chain restaurant closes Richmond location

A Taiwanese restaurant chain has officially closed one of its Richmond locations after more than 15 years.
Pearl Castle Cafe's CF Richmond Centre location has been serving the community a variety of Taiwanese dishes like popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup and bubble tea since 2009.
On Aug. 2, the chain announced that it is a "little bittersweet to say goodbye" to its mall location, citing that its business lease is due to expire.
Pearl Castle was established in 1996 by owner Jimmy Chen to introduce Taiwanese tea with fresh-made pearls and further expanded to a restaurant and cafe business a year later in Parker Place.
The restaurant then moved to Continental Plaza before opening more restaurants in Surrey, Burnaby and Richmond.
With its latest Richmond closure, Pearl Castle now only has its Continental Plaza location open, as well as its Club Kitchen location in Vancouver.
World’s best restaurant for 2025 revealed

The annual list is compiled based on the votes of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, which is made up of more than 1,100 international restaurant industry experts including food writers and chefs, in 28 regions around the world.
Restaurants can only win the top prize once, after which they’re entered into a separate “Best of the Best” program.
Members of that elite group include Geranium and Noma in Copenhagen, as well as New York’s Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, Mirazur in Menton, France and Central of Lima. Last year’s “50 Best Restaurants” winner, Barcelona’s Disfrutar, is also now on that list.
